CELEBRATIONS school was such a big part of Alex’s wonderful year in St. Cloud. He really enjoyed his classes and the sports activities. He was a member of the soccer and the track teams and he loved weight lifting. It was unbelievable how many people from Tech came to see us at the memorial, wrote us cards and letters, presented us pictures and gave us an idea of how Alex had spent the last 10 months he hadn’t been home. It made us feel much closer to him again. “Thank you, St. Cloud, for making the last 10 months of Alex’s life such a happy 10 months.” Thank you coaches for bringing the soccer team in their uniforms to the memorial and not only presenting us a soccer ball, but laying the little one down at the site of the crash. Thank you for your letters that showed us how much Alex was loved and how much his efforts were appreciated. Thank you to Alex’s friends for being there, for sharing their stories, for getting up on stage to speak so highly of Alex, for wearing the shirts they bought together, for coming over to Dave’s house, for keeping in touch with us. Thank you to EJ and Matt for giving us the picture album, for putting up the pin boards, for the slideshow and for playing Alex’s favorite music at the memorial. You are true friends. Thank you to Youth for Understanding, the exchange organization that not only brought Alex to the United States but had brought his parents over in the late 1970s to spend an exchange year with an American family. President Michael Hill and area representative Karla Knaus Ehlinger came out to St. Cloud to give wonderful speeches. YFU Germany and YFU USA took good care of us and continue to support us. Thank you to Michael Daniels from Daniels Funeral Home for being the person he is and making all the things that needed to be organized and done as least painful as possible. Thank you to Sandy and Jen and everybody else from the mayor’s office and to the City Council for all the generous help and the cookies during our days in St. Cloud. Thank you, St. Cloud, for making the last 10 months of Alex’s life such a happy 10 months. Thank you, Dave, for simply everything. Written by Jutta Voigt and Yorck Jetter along with Alex’s sister Kira Voigt, who is proud to be an exchange student with Youth for Understanding for the 2015-16 school year. Courtesy of Jutta Voigt.
