In Memory
BORN JULY 1, 1923 IN READING, PA - DIED JULY 13, 2014 IN CHELSEA, MI
James Huyett Krick
In July, the YFU family
mourned the loss of a long-time
friend. James Huyett Krick, with
the support of his wife, Barbara, were
involved with YFU for 55 years. The Krick family
hosted 18 international students during that time
and enjoyed the opportunity to sponsor many
American students exchanging overseas through
the Temple-Krick YFU Scholarship Fund. In addition
to hosting and sponsoring exchange students, Jim
was an active YFU volunteer for many years and
chaperoned numerous YFU trips out of Michigan.
James Huyett Krick, Age 91, of Dexter, passed
away on Sunday 13 July 2014 at Towsley Village in
Chelsea, MI. Jim was born in Reading, PA on 1 July
1923, son of Dr. William F. and Gertrude (Huyett)
Krick.
After graduating from Reading High School, he
attended Swarthmore College getting a degree in
Structural Engineering. Upon graduating he took
a job with The Austin Engineering Co. Austin did
much of the engineering work for Dow Chemical in
Midland, MI. While Jim was working in Midland,
MI, he met Barbara Ruth Temple at the First United
Methodist Church. They were married in that church
on June 18, 1954. After a European honeymoon,
he lived in Detroit and Cleveland. In January 1956
he moved to Ann Arbor to work for Cummins and
Barnard, Inc. and lived there until February 2012.
He became a copartner and retired from C & B in
2006.
Jim was active in the Eastern Kiwanis Club of
Ann Arbor and later the downtown Club. He served
on SCORE (Counselors to America’s Small Business)
for many years. He was active in the Michigan
Society of Professional Engineers and served on
The Washtenaw County Board of Appeals. He also
enjoyed plays and was a member of The Civic
Theater. From 1957 to 2012 his family was involved
with the teenage exchange program called Youth
For Understanding.
Jim is survived by his wife of more than 60 years

Baumgartner, Amade Schnyder and Marcel Hugo

Servan of Spain.
Jim loved to sail, fly and travel. He sailed and
raced his 19’ Lightning which he named “Kricket”
in Saginaw Bay and he used his airplane to take
him from Cleveland to Reading for many years. He
owned a plane before he owned a car. Jim’s interest
in Kiwanis took him to many national meetings. It
was a great opportunity to take the family camping
and see the United States. There were many trips
overseas to weddings and to show grandchildren
Europe. He loved to travel with friends and enjoyed
planning mystery trips.
On behalf of the Krick family, YFU would like
to acknowledge the generosity of Jim’s friends and
family who made 45 donations totaling nearly
$3,000 to support student scholarships in Jim’s
name.
