I’ve learned that to sleep I must check in with my body,

I start at the top. Cerebrum, cerebellum, cranial nerves.

Focus on brain stem, focus on spinal cord.

Count each vertebrae bump by bump.

Hopefully I’ll sleep before elbows, knees.

Hopefully I’ll sleep before ankles. If I could be anything,

I’d be the drawer where you hide your secrets.

I’d keep them buried deeper than muscle.

I’d make them mine. Tucked into cartilage, hardened to bone.
