House News S.T.E.M. Carousel Visit Year 9 were lucky enough to take part in S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) carousel. 12 people from different S.T.E.M related jobs, mainly from the British Geological Survey and other backgrounds including I.T, Food Technology and also a wide range of scientists from the University of Nottingham. I learnt a lot about jobs we could go into once we had finished our education, some of which I would not normally have con- sidered to be a job I would have gone into. All of these jobs were very interesting to me and I enjoyed listening to the speakers. I learned a lot and it especially helped me think more openly about my careers in later life. Overall, I think this activity was great and really useful, I also think every Year 9 should do this and we should have more activities like this one. Some experienced people came into school and a gave a brief introduction to the Year 9s about STEM careers. They spoke about how they got to where they are today and what skills they needed to pursue their dream jobs. Personally, I thought this was an interesting way of considering various jobs that are available. I enjoyed listening about geology because I find it interesting and it helped to know what qualifications you need. By Olivia Dunlop By Elliot Martin Nightingale Boot Will Baxter, Year 11 Boot House student, spends some of his spare time helping out at Framework, a charity for homeless people. He also decided to take part in a sponsored sleep out to raise funds for the charity. Miss Cooper interviewed him about his experience: “It was cold but fortunately dry. Around 200 people gathered to take part. I tried to wrap up warm with four layers and my sleeping bag, which is more than any homeless person has. From 6 pm to 8am we lived the life of a homeless person, cold, hungry and vulnerable. Before we began, I imagined it would be tough but I had no idea just how tough. I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me for their generosity and I am proud to have raised £140 towards helping those less fortunate than myself.” Framework do a fantastic job and we are very proud of Will for taking the time out of his busy life to help. Well Done Will! Ms Cooper 'Lawrence have been producing excellent work of late; whether it is their impressive human rights poster designs, effort in house dodgeball or contributions to both the politics quiz and helping staff and parents at Year 9 Parents Evening. They have increased their attendance percentage but work must still be done! Mr Allen and Miss Barton Lawrence
