Hedgehog Helpers
At this time of year at Kimberley School we seem to be inundated
with hedgehogs in need of a little bit of TLC and this year was no
exception, as these two young ladies can vouch. While helping
out as student receptionists, Megan Mather and Olivia Fox came
across a small hedgehog, out and about in the daytime, looking
a bit worse for wear. They came to report it to House Base
and Mrs. Marshall knew just who to ask for help. Miss Cooper,
Head of Boot House, is a registered African Pygmy Hedgehog
breeder and recently brought in her pet hedgehog, Conker, for
World Animal Day. She took the hedgehog home to look after
her as she was underweight and dehydrated, and later released
her in a safe place.
If you see a hedgehog out and about at this time of year, here
are some tips. Any hedgehog weighing under 600gms (11/4lb)
at around late October/November may not survive hibernation
without help. If needed, take it indoors and
place in a warm box with a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Regular food
and water are essential. Hedgehogs cannot be fed with cow’s milk; they
should be given a little fresh water and cooked chicken, or wet or dry
cat food (which does not contain fish) to eat. They can also be given
dried mealworms as a snack.
Unfortunately, Hedgehogs do carry pests, including fleas and
ticks. DO NOT use flea spray or powder on a hedgehog as
it can prove lethal. Take him/her to your nearest hedgehog
carer or animal sanctuary. Ring the BHPS (British Hedgehog
Preservation Society) on 01584 890801 to obtain the name
and number. You can also seek advice on their website
www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk or your local vet can also
provide help.
