If you could spend your summer as a sword fighter in King Arthur’s Court, winning medieval competitions, or learn the chemistry of potion-making from Gandalf, the Wizard, wouldn’t that be a summer to remember? Meghan Gardner thought so back in 2001, when she founded her first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) story-based camp.

Meghan directs the largest swordsmanship facility in North America, serving students of all ages, as well as producing corporate retreats. Her STEM camps see up to 200 multinational clients a week. The vision for Guard Up, Inc., the company that runs these highly demanding programs, comes from a serial entrepreneur’s heart, but, in Meghan’s case, it also comes from an interest in LARPs (Live Action Role-Playing) games. When you add to that a degree in video research, twenty-five years teaching martial arts, and enough expertise in edged-weapons defense that she could develop an underwater fighting program attended by Navy Seals, you start to string together her journey. But, actually, it was how she trained her own children to use their imagination through bedtime stories that set the stage for what she’s built.
