Contextualisation

To support the research question, the contextualisation will have four different parts to explain secondary sources about how game developers were using existing artworks from well-known artists that made digital games very unique to critics, gamers and researchers.

PART 1

There’s an interesting online press article MIND-BENDING SURREALIST GAMES THAT YOU MUST PLAY from Argyll Press, the author Roxanne Brien was writing about how surrealist games is fantastic and recommends gamers to play it (Argyll Free Press, online article, 2015). The article had mentioned three Surrealist artists which are Salvador Dali, Kansuke Yamamoto, M.C. Escher and Rene Magritte (Argyll Free Press, online article, 2015). The author had only referenced games such as Back-to-Bed which is inspired by surrealist artist, Salvador Dali and Monument Valley inspired by surrealist artist M.C. Escher (Argyll Free Press, online article, 2015). However the article has not referenced other artists, making it difficult to understand where the inspiration came from. The author has written “Surrealism is one of the most influential art movements of the past century” and “Surrealist artists have influenced not only musicians, and filmmakers, but also video-game designers, and developers” (Argyll Free Press, online article, 2015). This may explain how surrealist artist’s work contributed to game design, but not very critical at all.
