THE INFLUENCE OF WELL-KNOWN ARTIST WORK ON GAME DESIGN | Page 25

To understand surrealism of the practice by looking at the existing artworks and one of the good places to find out is Tate Modern because they are displaying the collection of International Surrealism. The collection explained about the poet Andre Breton, who published the First Manifesto of Surrealism in Paris 1924 (Tate Modern, display board, 2015). Breton had been stimulated by the theories of Sigmund Freud, who suggested the existence of an unconscious mind, and surrealism never became a shared artistic style (Tate Modern, display board, 2015). Some artists preferred to use highly realistic means to depict the imagery of dreams, whereas other artists used abstract works generated through ‘automatic’ techniques conceived without prepared themes or correction in order to avoid the control of the conscious mind (Tate Modern, display board, 2015). This is a very strong statement to explain the meaning of surrealism.
