THE INFLUENCE OF WELL-KNOWN ARTIST WORK ON GAME DESIGN | Page 15

Dark Seeds

The game Dark Seed, made by Cyberdreams, Inc that got disbanded in 1998 due to the amount of staff left the company (Games, website, 2016). The game has two worlds between the normal world as today and the world of fantastic realism (APPENDIX 3), the players must solve the puzzles to end the game.

A Fantastic Realism artist H.R. Giger, who worked on designing the concept of Ridley Scott’s film Alien, and he worked on two digital games called Dark Seed 1 & 2. He is one of the known artists who actually worked on games rather taking as inspiration. His fantastic realism made the game better because it was very new and never done before (Dark Seed, Digital Game, 1992). There’s an interesting quote in the game was “You see the design room, where many evil plans have been masterminded” to explain how H.R. Giger’s environment is very dark and evil, to give players some hint when exploring the world (Dark Seed, Digital Game, 1992). The story of the game may bring chills to the players when H.R. Giger’s work to create a horrific scene of a main character is getting an alien embryo planted onto the head by making a hole with a pipe (Dark Seed, Digital Game, 1992). The issues with the game for some gamers are that puzzles and key items in the environment are very difficult to solve because the use of fantastic realism blend the game mechanics too much as one background image.
