The real reward is when they come back later that day or the next day and say how they read the first issue and absolutely HAVE to have the rest of the series to date.

In fact, if you check out Grunt 1 B on Instagram or Facebook, you will see that Cavanaugh loves to have readers send in pictures of themselves with the latest issue, taking part in a virtual roll call from all over the world. “It’s been a lot of fun to keep in touch with them via social media after our initial meeting,” Cavanaugh said. “I love my readers!”

With each new show Cavanaugh attends, his core of loyal readers continues to grow. While at those shows, he also gets to meet and interact with seasoned industry pros who have been at their jobs for decades. “They’re very encouraging to speak with and all are living proof that it takes time to build the base,” he said. “Not days, weeks or months, but, years. And that’s okay.”

With each new issue, his portfolio grows and he is more able to prove Grunt 1 B Comics is more than a passing hobby. He plans to one day be one of those seasoned veterans of comic book mayhem, much like those he looks up to as role models.

“I really love what Image Comics puts out,” Cavanaugh said. “I’m a reader of The Walking Dead, Saga, East of West, Outcast, Southern Bastards.

They remind me that being an independent writer, artist and publisher of comics is a great niche. Todd MacFarlane, President and CEO of Image, is someone who I am trying to emulate.

His model of being the publisher for creator-owned comics, like mine, is really inspiring.
