Alan Rickman didn't start acting until the age of 42.

Rickman studied graphic design at the Royal College of Art (RCA) between 1968-69 in London and opened a studio in SoHo, where he helped design book jackets, album sleeves, ads, in addition to layouts and illustrations for magazines. This all came to an end when he started work in fringe theatre and then went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

His role as Hans Gruber in Die Hard earned him a spot on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains list as the 46th best villain in film history, though he revealed he almost did not take the role as he did not think Die Hard was the kind of film he wanted to make. His performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves also earned him praise as one of the best actors to portray a villain in films.

Not long after playing the role of Severus Snape in the Famous Harry Potter movies, the author J.K Rowling told him some charcter secrets about Snape that were never revealed until the last book. When the directors of the films would ask him why he was playing a sene a certain way or delivering a line in a particular manner, Rickman would simply reply that he knew something they didnt! A secret he kept for 7 years!

He turned down many film roles as his first love is the theater.

In the climactic scene of Die Hard where Hans Gruber falls to his death (spoiler alert!), Alan Rickman actually fell 21 feet to an air bag below. In order to get a genuine surprised reaction, the stunt man holding onto Rickman was instructed to drop him on the count of two (instead of three).

Alan Rickman turned down the role of the Sheriff twice before he was told he could more or less have complete freedom to do whatever he wanted with his interpretation of the character.

Some classic scenes from The Harry Potter series, with Rickman playing Severus Snape.
