went to art school at the Virginia Commonwealth University and after marrying fellow
student Joe Haske moved to New York City in 1967. The couple lived near New
York’s Jungian Institute and Youngblood’s early works reflect her interest in Jungian
psychology. Romana, for instance, embodies Jungian psychology in its combination of
masculine and feminine elements. Modeled on a female friend, the sculptural piece
depicts an elephant head growing out of a female torso. Youngblood’s animals are
often armless or limbless with unglazed clay skins. The fragility of her animals and
their materials are meant to convey the great strength of the human spirit. After living
in New York, Youngblood lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and currently resides in
Costa Rica. In 2003 she received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship.
