ARTISTS' BIOGRAPHIES Youngblood, Daisy American; (b. 1945, Asheville, NC; lives in Costa Rica) 1963–1966 Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA Daisy Youngblood was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and raised in the South. The couple lived near New York’s Jungian Institute and Youngblood’s early works reflect her interest in Jungian psychology. Romana, for instance, embodies Jungian psychology in its combination of masculine and feminine elements. Modeled on a female friend, the sculptural piece depicts an elephant head growing out of a female torso. Youngblood’s animals are often armless or limbless with unglazed clay skins. The fragility of her animals and their materials are meant to convey the great strength of the human spirit. After living in New York, Youngblood lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and currently resides in Costa Rica. In 2003 she received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship.
