HULTIAN: What is your background and how did you get to where
you are now?
OTTO: I was born and raised in Key West, FL and I am of Cuban descent. I
attended the University of Florida, and soon after graduation I was hired as a
manager for a private wealth management firm in South Miami, FL, where I
was helping a fellow contact do business with savings and loans. At that time,
all transactions were done by hand; you had to fill out these cards and then
the information was passed onto a spreadsheet. Around that time, we started
implementing new technologies in our business model, purchasing our first
computer for $10,000 dollars. Nowadays, you can buy a much more efficient
computer for less than $500. Towards the end of the 1970’s, I was invited to
manage the office of Paine Webber in Miami, FL. With my help, we moved
the office from Downtown Miami to Coral Gables and started the international
division. However, I soon realized that as a manager my income growth was
limited, so I decided to go back into production. Currently, our business is
assisting high net-worth Latin Americans and clients in the US with a variety
of business: we do municipal bonds, private money, mutual funds, and private
equity investments depending on the client’s needs. We create a portfolio that
reflects the client’s risk tolerance, timing and return expectations, and we
constantly monitor it as a means to meet the client’s expectations.
