When I signed up to get locked in a room
for an hour with seven of my best friends, I
was sure at least one of us was not making it
out alive. Instead, I now feel as though we
could conquer anything as a group.
Here at The Hub Windsor-Essex, we are
always encouraging you to get out there,
explore, adventure. This month, we want you
to explore in an entirely different way!
Windsor is now home to its own Escape
Room - a logic and intellectual puzzle room
where you are trying to find the passcode to
the exit door.
The Escape the Room concept originated
as a Japanese computer game, where players
clicked on different objects within the room,
looking for the key to the way out. A quick
Google search gives you challenges to escape
the office, the bedroom, the backyard and
more. In the last few years, real-life escape
rooms have popped out of the woodwork, and
Enigma Escape Room Windsor opened just a
few weeks ago.
AJ Miller was a Windsorite teaching
business in London, Ontario. He wanted to
return to the region, but was concerned about
finding a job suited to his skill set.
“I realized I had all the knowledge in
place to open my own Escape Room,” said
Miller. “People in Windsor were craving some
new forms of entertainment.”
My friends and I escaped in 54 minutes,
setting the record for the room. Miller is
booked solid, booking weeks ahead simply by
word of mouth. Modeling Enigma after some
of London’s escape rooms, it is a thematic
experience, focusing on the challenge and
element of surprise, instead of a horror or

scare factor like many of Michigan’s escape
rooms have.
“The plan right now is to have a trilogy
in place - the Rousseau trilogy.” Miller has big
plans for the future of his small facility
located on Tecumseh Rd between Dougall
Ave. and Church St. “The first installment,
what people are currently playing, is Professor
Rousseau’s office.” Different puzzles found in
the office offer a rich backstory - you’ll have
to try to escape on your own for more details!
“The eventual plan is to have the
professor’s research feed into the next room,
which would be her research trip out into the
jungle. The third room will tie into what is
found in the jungle.” Once the first room
stops booking as often and the other two
parts of the trilogy are in place, Miller plans
to start a second storyline to replace this one.
The escape room has gotten massive
support and been met with plenty of
enthusiasm from the Windsor community.
Definitely a thrilling experience, the room
gives you that childlike feeling of wonder and
imagination you’ve been missing in your life.
It’s refreshing to see a Windsorite offering
such a unique form of creativity to the
community.
Miller says the key to being successful is
to remember the room is
