Windsor International Film Festival
Bookfest Windsor
Poetry at the Manor
Eva Antonel
By the time October rolls around , we sense a certain seriousness in the air . Whether it ' s the shorter days , the falling temperatures or the quality of light that hints at the inevitability of winter , we do away with frivolous summer notions and activities and tend to look at our world with a critical eye . Are our cupboards stocked ? Are our winter coats at the ready ? Have winter tires been installed and antifreeze added to the windshield washer fluid ? Once all the practical aspects of daily living have been taken care of , we turn our attention to the business of art .
Publishing houses have been preparing for the release of new and noteworthy titles while television and film production houses are showcasing their best and often prize-worthy contenders . While we prepare to hibernate during the cold and dark , we make sure our itineraries are full of worthy books , shows and films . It ' s no coincidence that critics pick this time of year to let us know what we should be watching and reading . Several literary awards announce their short lists at this time and many literary and film festivals are scheduled for fall as well .
Windsor / Essex is no exception . BookFest Windsor , Southwestern Ontario ' s only literary festival , takes place this year from November 4 to November 6 . As it happens , two of the authors in this year ' s lineup , Catherine Leroux and Gary Barwin , have been included on the short list for the Scotiabank Giller prize . The achievement is even more significant since Catherine Laroux ' s publisher is Windsor ' s own Biblioasis . If you ' ve never attended Bookfest ,
