Soon, up to 20 per cent of The Beer Store’s offerings could be craft beer
joining the scene in 1984. Walkerville Brewery was the area’s
first, originally a brewery opened by Hiram Walker in 1980.
Rebranded in 2012, the brewery celebrated its third
anniversary mid September. Since 2010, a group of Ontario
Craft Brewers have organized Ontario Craft Brew Week, taking
place in mid June as an amalgamation of more than 50
Ontario craft breweries.
While light or amber beers similar to those of the
traditional beers from macrobreweries are common amongst
the local breweries, you’re often able to find beer with a twist “sours” are the most common these days. Sours allow brewers
to put their own unique spin on the process, adding sour
raspberry or cherry flavours to the mix. Sour isn’t the only
twist - you can also find beers flavoured with cucumber or
basil. Craftheads Brewing Company has a number of offerings
with blueberry or mango flavours. For a brief description of
how beer is made in general, take a look at our infographic on
page 12.
In late September, The Beer Store finalized an agreement
which will allow Ontario-based brewers to sell more of their
products in its locations. The complex deal will see space
sectioned off within The Beer Stores to display and stock craft )
