Soon, up to 20 per cent of The Beer Store’s offerings could be craft beer joining the scene in 1984. Walkerville Brewery was the area’s first, originally a brewery opened by Hiram Walker in 1980. Rebranded in 2012, the brewery celebrated its third anniversary mid September. Since 2010, a group of Ontario Craft Brewers have organized Ontario Craft Brew Week, taking place in mid June as an amalgamation of more than 50 Ontario craft breweries. While light or amber beers similar to those of the traditional beers from macrobreweries are common amongst the local breweries, you’re often able to find beer with a twist “sours” are the most common these days. Sours allow brewers to put their own unique spin on the process, adding sour raspberry or cherry flavours to the mix. Sour isn’t the only twist - you can also find beers flavoured with cucumber or basil. Craftheads Brewing Company has a number of offerings with blueberry or mango flavours.
