CONNECTING
While putting together this issue of The Hub, I had a stern
talking-to with our Food Matters columnist. “Try not
mentioning community gardens or farmers markets this
month, ‘kay?” I begged. Not that they’re not important, I
assured him - but let’s take a little break. In the end, he took
the month off, and the point was moot. But then, while editing
Green Space Matters, writer Angelica messaged me frantically.
“I forgot to mention community gardens!” she said.
It’s not a community gardener conspiracy, I’m sure. It’s
just proof that, whether as a source of food, a green space or a
neighbourhood gathering point, community gardens have
become an important component in regional renewal - and
isn’t that a wonderful thing? Likewise farmers markets. How
can we not mention either, especially in the merry month of
May, when it’s time to till the soil and sow the seeds that will
feed us, physically and psychologically, in the year to come?
So, consider markets and gardens mentioned, and
acknowledged.
Plants aren’t the only thing popping up at this time of
year. It’s car season - a time when motorheads and car
enthusiasts get busy under the hood and show off their pride
and joy at shows and cruise-ins. The season’s festivals are also
just around the corner - and most of them, from Strawberry
to Apple, will feature a car show. Our area’s tendency to
celebrate autos and agriculture side by side is just one of the
things that make life in Windsor-Essex so interesting.
It's May! Mother's day is almost upon us as is the start of
the many farmers markets we're lucky to be able to frequent
in our community. (Did you know that the Downtown
Windsor Farmers Market is moving to Pelissier St. this
summer?)It is also the start of festival season, outdoor patios,
outdoor concerts, boating, sun bathing and just generally
being able to enjoy everything summer has in store for us.
Can you tell I like summer?
I'm sure I'm not alone in loving to be able to open the
windows and dig up those flip flops and t shirts once again.
Luckily, we have many opportunities to get outdoors and
enjoy five full months of summer unlike many of our fellow
Canadians who aren't as fortunate to live in the southernmost
part of our country.
Checking out our monthly calendar of events is always a
good place to start as is having a look at our features to see
what others are up to. This month, we take a look at our green
spaces. We also check out car culture. If you haven't already,
you're bound to stumble upon at least one car show while
meandering the county this season. Stop in and have a look.
Cars are more than a means of getting from one place to
another for countless number of our neighbours. Wonder
why? I'm sure they'll be more than happy to tell you.
