Everyone loves a birthday party , and this year in Windsor-Essex we ’ re having a bunch of them - all year long !
It ’ s Canada ’ s 150th , so it ’ s also Ontario ’ s 150th ; it ’ s Windsor ’ s 125th , and Windsor Police Service is also celebrating 125 years as a police force ; and it ’ s St . Clair College ’ s 50th anniversary . For residents in Windsor-Essex , all those birthdays translate to plenty of parties , exhibits , cake , shows and gatherings all year long . There ’ s no doubt that 2017 is going to be a busy , active year in our neighbourhoods and communities .
And why shouldn ’ t we celebrate ? We ’ ve accomplished an awful lot in the last 25 , 50 , 100 and even 150 years . Alton C . Parker , a Windsor police officer , was the first black police detective in Canada . Walkerville ’ s Ernestine Russell was the first female Canadian Olympic gymnast . And they ’ re just two of the trailblazers who ’ ve called our area home . On the national stage , Canadians have been responsible for firsts in technology , innovation , medicine , sports and more .
So put your party hat on , and wave that red-and-white Maple Leaf - 2017 is going to be an exciting year . Here at The Hub , we ’ ll be revisiting this theme in every issue , all while continuing to bring ideas , information and people together . We ’ re unabashedly , proudly Canadian - “ sesqui ’ and we know it ! Be sure to subscribe so you don ’ t miss a single issue !

Spring is definitely in the air and with it a feeling of anticipation and renewal . We may not officially welcome the new season till the last part of the month but we ' re entitled to plan ahead aren ' t we ? If you didn ' t get the hint by our choice of cover , it will soon become obvious what the March issue is all about .
New ideas , novel approaches and the excitement of new discovery is entwined throughout these virtual pages like new green shoots reaching toward the sun . Unless you ' ve been living under a rock for the last several months , you know that 2017 is Canada ' s Sesquicentennial year . How ' s that for a mouthful ? In every issue till the end of the year , we ' ll look at the people and things that helped us forge our unique Canadian identity . We call this new column Canada Matters and after checking it out , you ' ll see why .
Is a subscription box in your near future ? If the answer is yes , you are not alone . The popularity of the concept of signing up to receive a slew of new , themed items , whether monthly or quarterly , seems to have captured our hearts and imaginations . Who doesn ' t love getting a package in the mail , especially if it contains a surprise ? We have a look at this phenomenon and let you know which ones are available region wide .
