Maple syrup, the Underground Railroad,
basketball … Canada’s heritage brings many
things to mind - so why shouldn’t we take a
day to celebrate them?
No you’re not reading the calendar
wrong – it is February, and not July 1. But us
lucky Canadians get a second day to celebrate
all things Canadian, providing a
much-needed winter boost and a great
chance to shake off the winter blahs. Heritage
Day, observed in mid-February, was created
by the Heritage Canada Foundation in 1973
to promote the history of our country. It also
coincides with the anniversary of the day our
maple leaf flag was inaugurated in 1965.
Heritage Day is themed differently each year,
and the Foundation has used it to celebrate
transportation, faith, farming and more.
There are plenty of ways to explore
Windsor-Essex this month that will also allow
you to honour important Canadian heritage
moments and monuments. With Family Day
and Heritage Day both falling on February
16th, it’s a chance to take an extra special
opportunity to get out and explore!
While it may not be our official national
sport, basketball was invented by a Canadian
in 1891. James Naismith created the official
original rule book and founded the basketball
program at the University of Kansas. Show
your appreciation for Naismith and all the
great Canadian basketball players that
followed by taking in a Windsor Express
Game this month. You’ve got home games on
February 4th, 13th, 22nd and 28th to choose
from, all played at the WFCU Centre.
