What Matters To You

Mixing Old School With New by James Zimmerman
For Generation X , Y and Millenials , it ’ s hard to believe that the popular file-sharing service Napster was started over 14 years ago . Ironically , most if not all of today ’ s teenagers will have never used Napster . It is considered a relic along with its fallen brethren Beta-Max , 8-track , VHS , cassette tapes and HD-DVD . In the modern age , technology has grown exponentially and has shaped the way we ’ re informed about , buy and digest audio or video entertainment .
We can order movie tickets online , preorder new music , and watch Michael Jackson battle-rap Elvis Presley , all from the comfort of our smartphones . This boom in technology has brought positive and negative changes to the entertainment landscape . It ’ s given us not only the means to digest new content but the means to create it as well .
Many believe we live in an age of over-share where the masses text , tweet and YouTube every mundane tidbit about their day . YouTube originally made it easy for the average person to climb on top of a virtual soapbox and exercise the right to free speech . Today you can find high-quality programming with much of it generated on a regular basis . The genres vary from educational , like TEDTalks and Big Think , to comedy like Epic Meal Time and Nice Peter . True Facts blurs the line and mixes these two genres , making the subject matter entertaining and engaging .
Since Napster ’ s popularity grew , there has been no shortage of copyright infringement claims , lawsuits or angry drummers wanting to inform the public

of a great injustice . They ’ re right and have a reason to be upset . Napster tried to make music easily accessible to the masses . What it failed to do was compensate artists , whether big or small , with their proper dues . iTunes provided us with a la carte service for our music that provides royalties to the artist . Now , other services like Amazon Prime and the Google Play Store , along with iTunes , offer books , music , movies , television shows and magazines . Want a more radio-like experience ? There is Pandora , Spotify and Songza for people to try .
Concern has grown over the relevance of physical mediums , like print and CDs , in a world that is changing to a digital medium , like smartphones and game systems . The experience of walking into a comic book shop or record store is lost in the digital realm and that matters to many people . A lot can be said about holding a physical copy of a beloved piece of work and being in a space with like-minded peers to discuss who would win in a fight between Deadpool and Green Lantern .
At the end of the day , digital media presents us with additional options packaged in a convenient and always-accessible medium . As consumers , that ’ s all we really want , convenience and choice at the cheapest possible price . Physical and digital media present us with a wealth of information and entertainment never seen before and it can only get better from here . Embrace it .
