If you have a spare room in your home and don ’ t mind an extra person around the house , this may be your opportunity to make a bit of extra cash and maybe even a new friend .
“ It was a financial decision ,” says Olivia Hefner of Windsor . “ I wanted to do a few things around the house , and it seemed like a good way to finance it .” She wasn ’ t looking for friendship but has kept in touch with a couple of her renters . “ I knew the type of person I wanted and did not settle for less . They had to be from out of town but close enough to home so they could return there for weekends . They had to be post-grad students or on short-term placements . They had to be non-smokers and non-drinkers . It worked out very well , it restored my faith in young people .”
Mary Atkinson , formerly of Windsor , has had many people rent a room in her home . “ Oftentimes they were friends of my kids , who needed lodging on a short-term basis ,” she says .
“ I didn ’ t go looking for them , but they all just seemed to appear at my door . I enjoyed having a young person around . If it all works out , it can provide so many benefits to all parties concerned . I like having a young person around and they felt like they had a home away from home . One still calls me her Canadian mom .”
Tips for a successful renting experience , according to Mary and Olivia :
4 Know the kind of person you are looking for 4 Don ’ t settle or be afraid to say no 4 Set out the rules of the house at the very beginning : let your tenant know which parts of the house he has access to and which are off limits
4 Clearly state the length of the rental arrangement
