Let The Games Begin

The International Children ’ s Games are getting closer ! With a recently released schedule of events , the IGC offers FREE admission to all sporting events . The Games run August 14 to 19 and sports competitions take place 8 p . m . to 4 p . m . each day at several venues throughout the city , including the new downtown aquatic centre .
With 900 volunteers signed on to accommodate the athletes from 84 cities in 31 nations around the world , Windsor is expecting 1600 athletes and coaches , plus another 1200 friends accompanying them to arrive in the city . Canada fields participants from 10 cities across the country .
Hundreds of young local dancers have been rehearsing for the opening ceremonies all summer . Kaili Trothen , age 12 , from St . Gabriel School , isn ’ t nervous at all . “ I ’ ve met a few new people , everyone ’ s been really nice .” Trothen ’ s been studying various forms of dance since she was four years old , and tried out for the ceremony team after hearing about it in dance class . “ You never know , this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity .”
Closing ceremonies are at 7 p . m . on Sunday at Riverfront Festival Plaza , followed by a fireworks display at 10:15 p . m .

Free Swim Monday

Beat the heat with Tim Hortons ’ sponsored free swimming on Mondays this summer at a variety of locations . This Windsor tradition gets kids and adults alike in the water , splashing away in the summer sun . Mondays from 1:30-4:30 at Atkinson , Central , Lanspeary , Mic Mac , Remington Booster and Riverside Centennial pools .
