Bike Tripping

Detroit , like Windsor , is also embracing the bike with its own cycling events such as the Tour de Ford Sept . 9 and the Tour de Troit on the 21st
If the current border situation keeps you in Canada , the Windsor Essex region offers plenty of opportunities to ride . Like to wine and dine ? Try a wine trail ride along the Essex Pelee Island Coast skirting along the vineyards where award-winning wine is grown , with a taste , of course .
And for more serious adventurers , check out The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure , a seven-day trip over a 900 km path beginning in Lakeshore and ending in Port Colborne . If that ' s not enough , this year ' s ride celebrates the opening of an addition 620 km of path that stretches all the way to Quebec . The ride goes from August 11-17 .
The community is highlighting active transportation with the introduction of Windsor ' s first Bike Commuter of the Year . Christopher Waters , member of the Windsor Bicycling Committee , said those who take a car off the road are contributing to Windsor ' s - and their own- health , and should be celebrated .
" Windsor is a great place to cycle , given its flatness and relatively mild climate , and we want to encourage a bicycling culture here which celebrates everyday active transit . There are , of course , challenges - including infrastructural ones which are slowly being addressed - but the potential is there to make this the best place to cycle in Canada ."
Bike Commuter of the Year Joan Murphy-Walker has been commuting by bicycle for most of her life . First it was the main main mode of transportation for herself and her children and then while she worked full time as a nurse for 30 years . She thinks more paths will help convert people from their automobile obsession .
" I think if you put the pathways out there , people will use them ," Murphy-Walker said . " It ' s going to take time because this community , they ' re so into cars ... but if you put the paths where they need to be for commuting , they ’ ll get used . People have to feel safe ."
While the infrastructure may not be up to par with larger cities , an increase in cyclists will demand more attention .
