10 The Hoot

At Chesterfield Day School, our faculty embraces the concept of learning by doing, both within and beyond the classroom. Playing and learning outside helps children understand and respect nature, as does teaching an appreciation for natural environments and all that nature provides. Our Maple Sugaring experience on February 20 at Rockwoods Reservation (Grades 2, 3 and 4) offered a unique mix of science, conservation and history in a single outdoor field work opportunity. While we were not able to collect tree sap because of the freezing temperatures on the day of our trip, we did return with a wealth of new knowledge and adventure.

It was fascinating to hear about the historical and modern processes of making syrup. We even had a chance to taste the sweet rewards that the forest has provided – sap from the maple tree, maple sugar and pure maple syrup!
