The rape of Dinah
Dinah the daughter of Leah, borne to Jacob. Dinah was in the regions ruled by Hamor when Shechem, the son of Hamor and prince of the region saw Dinah and "he seized her and layed with her by force" (Genesis 34: 2-3). When Jacob the father heard all his sons were in the field so he waited for them to come back. Finally once all the sons heard they were indignant and very angry (Genesis 34: 7-8).
The deal-breaker
Hamor comes to see Jacob
Hamor: "The heart of my son longs for your daughter, please give her to him in marriage" trade me your daughter for all of my daughters, I will give whatever you ask for, just let my son marry your daughter (Exodus 34: 8-13).
Jacob: We cannot give our sister to one who is uncircumcised! We will give her only if every male among you gets circumcised (Exodus 34: 14-17).
Hamor: Deal!
Jacob: Really? You’re going to make every male in your land get circumcised so that you can marry a girl.
Hamor: It would be better than your family ransacking our cities and killing all the males.
