AKA’s Paint the City Pink
The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated, Delta Iota Omega Chapter, cele-
brated their annual PINK IN THE CITY V, on
September 9, 2017 at Corrine Jones-Sanders
Beach Community Center. Their theme was “!
HOT ! Pink Summer Night Mystique”. The night
was filled with food, music, joyous company and
everyone dressed to impress in semi-formal attire.
The ladies of Delta Iota Omega, Pensacola
Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority lived up
to the name of this high-spirited event by illumi-
nating a pink masquerade theme and honoring
Cancer survivors, Alzheimer’s caregivers, and
Mental health advocates.
Music was provided by the 2017 Pink Jam DJ
“Cool DJ Ice Water”, who had many of the at-
tendees on their feet dancing throughout the night.
Mystique , the feel of the evening, truly inspired
the feeling of a New Orleans masquerade.
All guests were asked but not required to wear
pink in attendance. All donations went to MSABC,
the American Cancer Society’s for Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer, Covenant Care for Alz-
heimer’s Services and NAMI Pensacola, The
National Alliance for mental illness.
The evening included raffles and drawings
throughout the night with guests winning various
prizes. Cole’s Wings ‘N Things provided the
dinner for the evening which included a variety
of delicious shrimp, chicken, rice, and desserts.
Cole’s Wing’s also served as one of the events
many sponsors including Magic 106.1, Gulf
Power, Joe Patties.
The main focus of the event itself was created to
honor cancer survivors, Alzheimer’s caregivers
and mental health advocates.
The following night on Sunday September 10th,

at The Osceola Country Club in Pensacola. The
event featured wonderful soulful entertainment

Local Volunteers Assist with Irma Evacuees
As Hurricane Irma swept through
the state of Florida, local vol-
unteers stepped up to make the
transition a smooth one.
Gloria Wiggins, the American
Red Cross’ shelter manager at the
Pensacola Bay Center, opened
the shelter on Friday as Hur-
ricane evacuees began slowly
making their way through the
Florida Panhandle, ending up
in northwest Florida’s western
most community in Pensacola.
Wiggins has been volunteering
with Red Cross since 1992 and
enjoys the work. She stated that
the Red Cross provided shelter,
a bed, and food for the evacu-
ees. It housed up to 300 people
during the storm and is down
to approximately 90 as families
begin to head to their homes
in South Florida, Georgia, and
South Carolina.
Christal Montgomery is an-
other volunteer from Pensaco-
la’s Black Community that has
been working for Red Cross for
years. Montgomery has worked
in faith-based ministerial work
and continues to represent area
churches in community out-
reach. She is associated with Life
Changing Experience Worship
Center located on West Jackson
Street and Pace Blvd. in Pensac-
ola. Life Changing Experience
Worship Center was involved as
a caravan of local area church
vehicles providing assistance to
hurricane victims hunkered down
in the Bay Center. The caravan
brought blankets, oral hygiene
products, soap, and clothing.
Family & Friends Gather for Mr.Horn Birthday
Family and friends met at Cathedral
of Faith church to give Mr. Charles
Horn a surprise birthday party for his
82nd birthday. There to greet him
were his children Cynthia, Gayle,
Thelma, Michelle, and Geraldine,
his grandchildren and great grand-
children.
Charles Horn is one of eleven chil-
dren. He and his brothers are known
in the community for being brick
layers, contractors and lawn and
landscaping engineers.
Charles Horn started laying bricks
in 1953 and has been building homes
50+ years. He attends Olive Manor

The program began with a welcome
by his sister Joyce Evans followed by
prayer and blessing of the food with
Minister Jimmy Savage. Mistress
of Ceremony for the occasion was
Lydia Averhart, his granddaughter
and Trinitee Abrams entertained the
crowd with a spiritual dance.
Commissioner Lumon May stopped
by also to wish Mr. Horn a happy
birthday.
