Cal Flyn & Karl Geary -
Debut Authors with a Difference
MON 27 NOV · 7PM · £5
DICK INSTITUTE
Two debut authors, two
mesmerising stories.
Cal Flyn was very proud when she
discovered that her ancestor, Angus
McMillan, had been a pioneer of colonial
Australia. However, when she dug deeper,
she began to question her pride as McMillan
had played a dark role in Australia's bloody
history. Thicker Than Water combines
memoir, history, travelogue and lyrical nature
writing.
Unfolding in the sea-bright, rain-soaked
Dublin of early spring, Montpelier Parade
by Karl Geary is a beautiful, cinematic novel
about desire, longing, grief, hope and the
things that remain unspoken. It is about how
deeply we can connect with one another,
and the choices we must also make alone.

DICK INSTITUTE
We are delighted to
welcome back critically
acclaimed author Denise
Mina.
Denise will discuss her recent publication
The Long Drop which is based on true
events. The Long Drop is an extraordinarily
unsettling, evocative and compelling novel
from a writer at the height of her powers.
William Watt wants answers about his
family’s murder. Peter Manuel has them.
But Peter Manuel is a liar. William Watt is
an ordinary businessman, a fool, a social
climber.
Peter Manuel is a famous liar, a rapist, a
criminal. He claims he can get hold of the
gun used to murder Watt’s family.
One December night in 1957, Watt meets
Manuel in a Glasgow bar to find out what
he knows….
"A masterpiece by the woman who may be
Britain’s finest living crime novelist"
