october 2017 Greenstone events | 7 Coffee morning with Pamela Heller-Stern On Friday, October 27, author Pamela Heller-Stern will attend the Friends of Mod- derfontein Library’s coffee morning where she will introduce her latest novel, “Who’s Knocking on my Door?” discuss the book’s condensed style as well as her writing career. This event will take place in the Thornhill Estate community centre, Queen Street, Modderfontein at 9:30am. Refreshments will be served and the talk will fol- low. Cost for attendance is R20 per person and members of the public are welcome to attend. Pamela, ex-Cape Town now transplanted Gautenger, has always been carried away with fine art, writing and research. She lectured in English Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand at the tender age of 22 and completed her Doctorate there at age 25. “Who’s Knocking on my Door: Could it be Death?” a rather sinister title, opens with the dramatic story of a young South African sol- dier who fought in North Africa in World War 11 and was shipped to Italy as prisoner-of-war. Since her retirement 10 years ago, she writes full-time. Her newly completed novel “Have a Heart” will be published in the UK in June 2018. Pamela’s books will be on sale after the talk and she will be donating 10% of the sales as well as copies of 2 of her novels to the Friends of Modderfontein Library for their new premises. Holy Rosary Debutantes raise close on R1 million Holy Rosary High School recently held its annual Debutantes Ball, at the Birchwood Hotel, to celebrate its Grade 10 Debutantes’ fund raising efforts. This year R833 213 was raised and over 1200 community hours were worked by the 70 girls. A portion of the funds raised will go towards various charities including the Holy Rosary Sisters, CHOC, Love of Christ, St Anne’s Old Age Home, Holy Rosary’s Out reach Programme – Phumelela and Little Eden.
