The Greenstone Guide August 2017

august 2017 14 This month, our resident ‘foodie’, Anél Potgieter, explains how to make good old- fashioned fried fish and onion rings in a simple beer batter. he month of August gives us a great opportunity to celebrate the wonderful women in our lives. National Women’s Day is a public holiday which we celebrate annually on August 9. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country’s pass laws that required South Africans defined as ‘black’ under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal ‘pass’ that served to maintain population segregation during the apartheid era. National Women’s Day draws attention to significant issues the women in our country still face, such as parenting, domestic violence, sexual harassment in the workplace, unequal pay, and schooling for all girls, and due to this public holiday, there have been many significant advances, but we are still not where we need to be yet... Let’s use this day, not to just enjoy the time off from work and from school, but also to move forward as a country in our views towards women. With that said, we trust that you will enjoy this issue as we visit Decathlon and Red Door Café. Have a good month as we edge nearer to spring!
