Great Ideas for your summer vacation

Do you often find yourself bored and
unsure of what to do on your summer
vacation? Are you tired of doing the
same activities? Well look no further,
because here are some hidden gems of
summer that you should check out!
The first location is appealing to those
who love the performing arts and often
find themselves stumped on what to
do on a rainy summer afternoon. The
Company Theatre in Norwell is a quality establishment where you can see
professional and recreational plays
and musicals for a fraction of the price
of what you would pay at the Boston
Opera House. The theatre's summer
season includes one of the most well
known musicals, "Les Miserables,"
featuring AHS grads Jess Golden and
Katie Beckvold of the Class of 2011.
Each ticket is less than $40, which is a
bargain compared to other local and
professional theaters. Junior Alessandra Vento states, "It's nice how they
get so many talented actors that perform such amazing shows."
The next location can be found right
down the street (1209 Bedford St. Rte
18) from the high school. For those
with a knack for ceramics, South Shore
Pottery Shop is a place where the

an endless choice of pre-sculpted
bowls, cups, plates, and other knick
knacks. They even offer teen nights, so
you can meet new friends and create!
Feel the need to take a walk through
history? Burial Hill in Plymouth is the
perfect place to do just that. Even
though the graveyard atmosphere may
spook you at first, after a few minutes
the names on the gravestones will
intrigue you. One of the most notable
figures buried here is William Bradford, the first governor of Plymouth
Colony. Despite the scariness, a few
minutes spent in this graveyard could
turn into the perfect summer stroll.
And it's right down the street from the
shops and restaurants in Plymouth
Harbor.
The final summer getaway is the perfect
place to go on a sunny day. Among the
colorful beach houses in Scituate Harbor, you will find a small yet beautiful
lighthouse that is open to year round
visits. This is an ideal location for a
summer photo-op, or just a quiet stroll
near the calm waters of the harbor. Between the gorgeous flowers and
the friendly people, the Scituate Light
House is a great place to go when you
need a break.

Book Review: “Birdie Bowers: Captain Scott’s Marvel”
A True Inspiration

“Birdie Bowers: Captain Scott‟s Marvel” is a biography of Henry “Birdie”
Bowers, a member of Robert Falcon
Scott‟s infamous South Pole expedition
that failed to reach the pole before
Ronald Amundsen‟s expedition, and
caused a number of people‟s deaths.
The book was written by Anne Strathie
who actually visited Antarctica and the
hut Captain Scott stayed in during his
adventures in the South Pole. The book
follows Bowers from a young child
until his death while recounting all of
the incredible feats he accomplished
and all the countries he travelled to
in his lifetime. The book takes place in
the late 1800s and early 1900s, and in
many places around the world, from the
United Kingdom to India, and ending
with his expedition to Antarctica. Anne
Strathie describes Bowers as “an almost
perfect man with great sailing skills, a
cheery personality and a never give up
attitude.” Strathie‟s writing includes
vivid detail of the time period and even
numerous letters from Henry Bowers
himself. Birdie Bowers is a true role
model for others to follow. He was a
team player in every sense of the word.
Even when facing imminent death,
trapped in an Antarctic blizzard, Bowers
kept up the spirits of the entire group
until the very end. This book is perfect
for anyone interested in reading about
exploration, adventure, and overcoming
hardship.
