Some of the most picturesque cities, towns and villages in France are found in Provence; a region where your senses will be overflowing. The delightful smells of lavender; the colours of the flowers, the taste of the region’s wine, there’s so much to love. One of the most engaging cities is Aix en Provence, the birthplace of the painter Cezanne; it is now a University city. Aix is home to leafy boulevards dotted with 17th and 18th Century mansions. Stone lions guard the entrance to the main avenue. You cannot help but fall head over heels for Aix and yet only 50 km south is another place which will captivate you – the harbour town and seaside resort of Cassis. Located at the foot of a tall cliff, Cap Canaille, Cassis has a picturesque fishing port lined with cafes and restaurants. But it probably most famous for its “Calanques” – narrow inlets framed by steep limestone cliffs. Don’t visit Cassis without taking a boat ride out to the Calanques, the asure blue waters are simply mesmerizing, reminiscent of the Indian Ocean.
