Jonathan Fenby’s The History of Modern France, from the Revolution to the Present Day, is published by Simon & Schuster £25. He is also the author of The General; Charles de Gaulle and the France He Saved, and France On The Brink. Married to a Frenchwoman, he is a frequent visitor to France and lived in Paris for 12 years as correspondent for Reuters, The Economist and The Times.
