BP: What brings you the most joy at Jhamtse Gatsal, which is Tibetan for “garden of love & compassion”?

lP: The same simple things—the children’s smiles, their laughter and mischief—which remind me of the joy of being a child. I also get an opportunity to relive my childhood through them. Seeing the inquisitiveness in their eyes and being carefree are reminders of a childhood well spent. I feel privileged that I am able to create a space for them to have a childhood and I get to be a part of it too.

BP: What brings you heartache?

lP: My own impatience!

BP: Amidst the multi-leveled attentions requested of you on a daily basis, how do you prioritize and stay centered?

What is the biggest challenge?

lP: What helps me stay centered is the purpose of my life and my work. The goal of our work is how to make a good human being, which is also our biggest challenge. It is a challenge because it is not a finite or conclusive goal. It is a constantly evolving goal which involves transforming oneself and helping others to reach the same understanding.

At the Community, the adults often question themselves on their role in this creative process. Leading by example is the best way to help a child learn the habits and values we wish to instill in them. This is a huge undertaking requiring constant attention.
