An average of 6-9 hours of sleep has been suggested to
be the norm. This amount varies with changes in health, hormone levels, and
emotional stressors.
We need enough sleep to feel refreshed emotionally, energized physically and able to carry out mental tasks. Thus the sleep requirements of each individual change during their life time as dictated by their situation.
The one-third of our lives we spend sleeping supports how healthy, energetic, and happy we are the other two-thirds of our lives by contributing to a healthy immune system, regulating the levels of hormones, and balancing brain (central nervous system) activity.
Lack of sleep alters the levels of the hormones Leptin and Ghrelin which have a direct role in feelings of hunger and satiety.
Types of sleep disturbances:
Insomnia falling sleep
Insomnia staying sleep
Hypersomnia
Restless leg syndrome
Sleep talking and walking
Night terrors
Treatment of sleep problems has been a challenge for the physician and the patient. There are multiple types of medication for use in the treatment of sleep issues: hypnotics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, anti-depressants, antihistamines, GABA receptor modulators, and hormones like Testosterone. Natural supplements that are used consist of Tryptophan, 5-HTP, Melatonin, Valerian Root, Magnesium, Passion Flower, L-Theanine, and Adaptogens. Some of our patients are also self-medicating with Alcohol and Marijuana.
