We’re all surrounded by people — those of whom we love or not, appreciate or not and need or not.

Look into their faces, what do you see?

Being a psychotherapist, coach and entrepreneur, involves communication with many different

people, and there is one quality that unites all of them. They are all heroes! Typically a hero is someone who is “admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great” (Cambridge dictionary). People are open with me and do share their thoughts, some to get

support and advice, others - because they feel safe or just need to be connected. What they don’t

realize is that all their stories encompass heroism.

Our lives are woven from thousands of exploits. Raising kids and sleep deprivation, struggling with lack of food and money, maintaining hope when everybody says to surrender, taking care of our loved ones, coping with aging — the list may be endless. I moved to Canada almost three years ago and with good fortune live in a country of heroes — immigrants who despite their fears and the

unknown left their comfort zone for an apparent brighter future; citizens who opened their doors and hearts to newcomers. There is space for everyone.

I would define heroism in two words, namely “making the extra-effort” to become better, to change your life and the life of others. Stop for a moment and look around! Do you know of such people?

My background is Russian and our culture teaches us to be quiet about our deeds. Speaking about yourself is comparable to bragging and immodesty. However, in today’s society it seems as though you have to scream about yourself in order to be recognized.
