Foreword
Sated and weary the Summer is lying,
Dreamily living his youth again,
And the harvest sprites are flitting and flying,
Fanning his brows with the golden grain...
And the flowers fold up from the close dense air,
And a shadowy sleep sits everywhere.
— J.J. Britton, “Death”
I hope you all had a fantastic summer. Thank you for waiting so patiently for our
combined Summer/Fall issue. I think you’ll find it’s worth the wait.
Autumn is my second-favourite season for two reasons. One is Halloween, which
I imagine isn’t a surprise coming from a ghoul. The second is the colour. Every year
is different, depending on the temperature and how long the summer lasts.
Watching the trees change colour is kind of like watching one last performance
before the show packs it in for another year. It’s a finale like no other.
In this issue, I am so pleased to announce the winner of our Fall Short Story
Contest. In addition, you will find a great line-up of stories and poems, along with
some entertaing creative non-fiction from our regular contributors. You will also
find our first serial fiction piece, which I persuaded our talented submissions editor
to let me include. So turn the page and dive in!
Enjoy those colours!
