Classical treats
From January 15th
Recent years have been a bonanza for classical music fans on
Lanzarote, with several projects that have established the island as
the perfect venue for intimate and relaxed performances by worldclass artists.
Neverthless, the oldest classical festival on the islands, the Canarian
Music Festival, is now in its 31st year and, as usual, offers a selection
of treats for the New Year.
First, there is the return of the Slovakian chamber orchestra Capella
Istropolitana, who will be performing at Arrecife´s Teatro Insular on
15th January at 9pm.
Next, on the 18th is a special event on the island of La Graciosa,
wh ere the Canarian chamber group, the Galdós Ensemble will play at
the Church of Carmen.
On the 22nd, Gran Canarian tenor Manuel Goméz Ruíz will sing,
accompanied by pianist Ignacio Clemente Estupiñán at the Theatre of
San Bartolomé.
A special treat is in store for February 3rd, too, as Italian group
I Turchini perform 17th and 18th century Neapolitan music at the
Convento de Santa Domingo in Teguise.
Tickets are €15 (€10 for Manuel Goméz) and can be ordered at

Marlango
23rd January
Leonor Watling was born and brought up in Madrid by a British mother and
Spanish father. After studying acting in the 90s she started to appear on TV and in
films, but she also found time to start a band with the pianist Alejandro Pelayo.
Watling is currently one of Spain´s busiest actresses, best known for her roles in
Pedro Almodovar´s Talk To Her and Bad Education, but music is still a hugely
important part of her life – her current partner is Jorge Drexler, the Oscar winning
Uruguayan songwriter – and the Marlango project has released six albums.
Marlango’s blend of late-night jazz, emotional blues and atmospheric boleros
has won them increasing success in Spain and beyond, and Watling´s intimate,
torch-singer vocal style and Pelayo´s evocative music have matured into something
very special – a blend that is perfectly experienced live.
Marlango’s latest album, El Porvenir (The Future) was released to acclaim in
September last year, and Watling and Pelayo will be showcasing the project at
Arrecife’s Theatre on 23rd January at 9pm.
Tickets will be available from 7th January at the Cabildo´s Culture Dept, or
on the door if the tickets don´t sell out.
