Dear Gazette, In response to Mr and Mrs Tyler (last month) I have to say that I won´t miss the sunken ship at all, I´m afraid. Lanzarote is famous for its natural landscapes, and it’s a shame that an eyesore such as a run- Ed: You, and all the others who have photographed the platform, must be suffering from an optical illusion, George. Repsol clearly said “The closest distance between the platform and the coast will be 50 kms… it is not possible to see a boat at that distance.” n Having a laugh Dear Gazette, Kit (Letters, last month) must be having a laugh! He says he´s seen bikes without lights on the wrong side of the road, the poor chap (if he’s a chap?). I wonder how many of those bikes threatened him or put his life at risk? Try having cars rush about 50 cms past you at 30 or 40 kph above the legal speed limit. Try having them rev menacingly right behind you if they come up behind you on a smaller road. If you´re lucky enough to have a cycle lane, try to avoid the glass and other rubbish that you’ll find in it. Then come back and complain that the authorities aren´t cracking down on some kid on a bike. Yours Charlie Hope n Thanks, Santa! Dear Gazette Over the past I have spent Christmas holidays with my family in Costa Teguise. Every year a man dressed as Father Christmas has been walking around giving presents to all the children. My curiosity finally got the better of me, and asking around, all I could find out was that he did it voluntarily; his name was Barry and he lived in Tahiche. On behalf of my children, and I´m sure many more whose Christmas holidays he has made a little bit more special, I would like to thank him and wish him a very happy Christmas! Yours sincerely, J. Marsh, Kingsbury n The “invisible” oil rig Dear Editor A couple of years ago, Repsol claimed the oil rigs wouldn´t be visible from the shore. Well, it´s perfectly visible right now, and I doubt it´s LAPTOPS AND PC, moving any further away. If they can´t be trusted on this what, I wonder, can they be trusted on? Yours sincerely George C via email C/ Merlin Ed: You´re right, Patricia. “Many” was an error, for which we apologise. There have been experimental embarcations from Lanzarote in recent years, but there is still nothing regular. Arrecife is a Schengen port, and embarcations have taken place in the past, so there don´t appear to be technical or bureaucratic barriers. And while there may not be the demand for round trips commencing from the island, allowing people to join or leave cruises at any stop would make travelling much more flexible for many tourists. aground ship should have been allowed to rust in peace for so long. Rather than welcoming visitors to Costa Teguise, I´ve always thought it did the opposite – it´s a forbidding and sad sight. The only bit of luck is that it happened in a place that was already one of the ugliest on the island, thanks to the power station and desalination plant. But I´ll still be glad to get a clear view of the sea for the first time in 30 years. Jim Via email C/ Del Mayor What mystifies me is the final paragraph, which states that many cruises can be joined at Lanzarote, as I find this a huge exaggeration. For many months now I have been investigating the possibility of local residents joining cruisers at Lanzarote. I´ve visited many travel agents throughout the island and come up against a brick wall, with the exception of two small cruise lines who would pick up passengers. Nonetheless, none of the larger, wellknown lines seem to be showing any interest. I know there are many Lanzarote residents who enjoy cruising, but in order to board the type of boat they require, they have to travel to Barcelona, Malaga, other Canary islands or even the UK. Perhaps Rafael Juan González or Julio Romero or anyone else could make suggestions on how the residents of Lanzarote can share some of the benefits allocated to passengers of these great cruise ships so we can have a choice of cruising other than Mein Schiff and Aida.
