The intention is for sealife to
transform the sculptures
colours have inspired Jason so much that he has taken some of the sculptures out with him
to photograph them in striking local landscapes. His artistic eye has also been captured by
the distinct and vivid lichens that can be found all over the island.
Jason has been a diver for as long as he´s been an artist, first learning in Malaysia as a
child. At art college he was inspired by the works of “land artists” such as Andy Goldsworthy,
“
“
The museum will last
hundreds of years and will
become a marine environment.
Jason´s museums have already proved a big draw in
Grenada, where his museum attracts 30,000 visitors a year
and was called “a wonder of the world” by National
Geographic. In Cancún, 250, 000 tourists arrive every year,
and Jason´s museum there does the valuable job of diverting
many of them from the endangered coral reefs in the area.
But Lanzarote is another story again: “It´s totally different
here,” says Jason, ”The light is different – an incredible blue,
with wonderful visibility.” According to Jason the whole isle of
Lanzarote is “artistically like a dream – you get these amazing
contrasts in the landscapes – blacks, blues, whites.” These
but wanted to extend this to the undersea world he loved so much. “I also wanted to make
permanent works,” he says “I don´t like dismantling installation s.”
The permanence of Jason´s work means that the Lanzarote underwater museum is a
project that will be discovered by future generations as well as our own – an almost
indestructible legacy of art on Lanzarote.
Jason is also seeking models for his project – and says he is mostly interested in
local people. If you´d like to be modeled in concrete that will far outlast you on
Lanzarote´s seabed, contact Jason on [email protected]
