Beginning near Nundle, 60km south-east of Tamworth, it heads north through Tamworth, Manilla, Barraba, Bingara, Warialda, Inverell, Glen Innes and Emmaville, before finishing up near the Queensland border at the idyllic town of Tenterfield.
