Sports Captains- Initiatives

In the past 2 years, we (Natascha Storf and Rasul Kadyrov) have initiated and established a sports captain programme in Verdala’s high school, aiming to give all students an opportunity to participate in different sports during lunch times and free lessons. When we came to grade 11, we both felt unsatisfied with the amount of sports opportunities available, especially to the IB students, as they no do not have PE lessons during school time. So we decided to make a change!

We now organize and hold lunch events every 1 to 2 weeks, with different sports each week, which are open to all students in 9th-12th grade. This not only gives an extra opportunity for everyone to distract themselves from the monotony of class time, but also promotes bonding between grades as students communicate and collaborate when playing team sports.

Additionally, we organise advisory events around every 2 weeks, for a different grade each time, depending on their availability. We want to increase the student’s motivation and participation, so we let each grade decide what sport they would like to play. Organizing these events has been difficult, especially in the beginning, when the programme was still brand new and fresh, and a lot of people had to be notified and reminded of our plans. Yet to us, it was worth it, as the events are highly appreciated and we receive positive feedback regularly from students, as they are given the opportunity to play different sports during their free time, and there is a fun yet competitive mood when having other students watch them play. Since we are almost done with 12 grade, we are now passing down the sports captain programme to grade 11 students, Luna Jonker, Finley Gratil, and Reia Morter.
