IB Chemistry is in full swing!

HIGH SCHOOL

Ms. Sarah Shuttleworth - Chemistry Teacher

Year 12 have started their second year of their IB Chemistry and have been working through their required practical work. This will help them with their IA also.

They have been performing qualitative tests to distinguish between specific functional groups in Organic Chemistry. They have oxidised Primary and Secondary alcohols to produce aldehydes and ketones and then using their scientific knowledge and skills to categorise their products.

Personal Development

As part of the Year 10 Personal Development program students have been looking at Actions and Consequences. As we help to guide and prepare them for their future, we have been working in small groups, sharing ideas, and discussing issues that they will come across in their life. Each group looked at different situations and commented on the possible actions and then the consequences that could arise from them. They then chose their own topic and presented it, using various media, such as power point presentation, role play and a short video. Topics chosen by the students included, Racism, Peer pressure and Bullying. They took a mature approach to the activity and on reflection decided that it had been a worthwhile exercise, allowing them to become both independent thinkers but also to see things from a different perspective.
