Open Stage Events

As part of Mrs. Laryea’s initiative to encourage all students to ‘get up on stage and perform’, there have been several occasions over the course of the year where Open Stage opportunities have happened. These have been part of other events taking place in the school, the first of which was the MUN closing ceremony at the end of March, and the second was the Middle School Arts Exhibition, at the end of April.

An outside stage had been set up at these events and Mrs. Laryea used this as an opportunity to invite those who were interested to put themselves forward to perform on their chosen instrument. Some students used this as an opportunity to showcase their exam pieces before the official exam day, and others to give their electric guitar an airing! At both events, a number of students performed and in this relaxed setting, they confidently took to the stage and really enjoyed themselves in the process.

As we near the end of the academic year, we are days away from presenting the Middle School musical which has involved everyone in Grades 6, 7 and 8, so another musical event to be proud of, and before the term finishes, the Vocal Group will be performing once again at the end of term assembly on June 20th.

As we move into the next year, the opportunity the students have to get involved in music at Verdala is set to increase with the introduction of instrumental and vocal lessons on offer for Grades 4 through 8. In addition, Vocal Group will be taking place as part of the ASA programme from September, and we have our first Christmas Market performance already booked in the diary for the beginning of December! The other musical activities are currently being finalised. Music will also be branching out into High School with the introduction of music into the IGCSE programme and the starting up of a couple of High School student-led music groups. More information with regards to all of the above will be communicated before the end of term.

It has been such a pleasure teaching music here at Verdala this year, and I look forward to watching it continue to go from strength to strength over the coming year.
