Literature mirrors the hopes, dreams, illusions, and knowledge of our world. “Literature does not just take up space on our bedside table; rather, it drags us down or lifts us up, altering our moods, pulling on our attention, and exciting our feelings” (Dr. Paula M. L. Moya, Stanford.)

Why study literature? Literature is more than just words on a page. It links us to the world we live in. Stories are shared from generation to generation reflecting personal and communal experiences allowing us new perspectives on familiar issues. Literature encourages us to explore and experience other worlds both real and imaginary. It provides us with an opportunity to identify with characters and an assortment of experiences.

Literature prepares us for the future. In literature lessons we read a range of texts individually and collaboratively whilst learning skills such as the ability to infer information and evaluate issues as well as how to intellectually express ourselves. Our students consider the human condition through literature and further develop values such as compassion and responsibility. They learn to think creatively and critically about local and global issues which are vital skills for the 21st century.

In Middle School we aspire for students to actively enjoy literature. We celebrated Verdala Book Day this March. Students were encouraged to arrive to school dressed as their favourite book character and give peer book recommendations. We take weekly library trips to select books and share stories. In literature lessons students are guided in appreciation of novels, short stories, drama and poetry. We make connections to the concepts correlating to the IMYC curriculum whilst studying characters, setting, plot and literary techniques. In language lessons creative writing is promoted to enrich vocabulary, strengthen spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as allowing students to take on the role of an author.

In High School, Grade 9 and 10 students are studying IGCSE Literature and Language. In addition to analysing the Cambridge International Examination set poems, play and prose students are exposed to exemplary language and a lifelong love of literature is actively encouraged.

Each week in Grade 9 English, teachers introduce an article or short story, allowing students to experience the wider world of literature. Students are immersed in different genres and perspectives that encourage them to investigate the human condition and embrace the power of new perspectives. Vivid vocabulary is introduced, explored and applied to strengthen written and verbal communication skills.
