Entry and Exit Point Activities

Throughout the course of year five, Big Ideas are implemented as part of the IMYC curriculum. In order to engage students in the process of learning and provide an introduction to the concept, students participate in an exciting Entry Point activity. These often occur outside the classroom.

At the end of each Big Idea, students show their understanding of the concepts they have been learning and how they connect to the Big Idea through an activity called an ‘Exit Point’. The Exit Point activities are projects which have been planned by their teachers to consolidate the students’ learning. Students are engaged in the Exit Point activity for the period of an afternoon where they plan, research and produce a media presentation that reflects their understanding. Once these presentations are completed, the students present their work to their peers and teachers.

The following are examples of the most recent Exit and Entry Points in Middle School:

Grade 6

Students learnt about the concept of ‘Consequences’ with the ‘egg drop’ activity. Students were given the task to protect an egg from breaking when being dropped out of a first floor window. With limited materials, students worked collaboratively to plan and create a parachute to keep the egg from breaking. The students came up with some very creative designs.

At the end of the unit of ‘Consequences’, students were given a series of ‘What if…’ questions from their subject teachers. They were asked to answer one of the questions in the form of a play which they wrote and presented to their grade. It was wonderful to see how the students made connections in their learning and presented their work enthusiastically.
