The Duke of Edinburgh Award at Verdala
Grade 9 Verdala students are enthusiastically working toward achieving the Duke of Edinburgh
Bronze Award. Teachers Mr. McColl, Ms. Binda and Ms. Wrigley are certified Duke of Edinburgh
Award Leader Trainers and are directing students and staff support in the process. Candidates
must complete a personal programme that includes activities in volunteering, physical activity,
skill building and successfully completing an overnight expedition. The upcoming expedition to
qualify for a Bronze Award requires students to attend a skills course, practice collaboratively
and create a plan. They recently completed the training course and are eagerly organising
expedition details. They’ll have a practice expedition to allow for reflection and readiness. A
Bronze Award expedition is 2 days and 1 overnight that includes a minimum of 6 hours trekking.
Afterward, students will debrief and present their experiences for assessment and qualification.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an internationally recognised programme that allows young
adults to develop teamwork and leadership skills, implement effective communication, explore
their individual strengths and weaknesses, work as a team for a greater goal and view
education as an adventure. Once students have qualified with a Bronze Award, they’ll begin
working toward a Silver Award in Grade 10.
