Year 9 Chemistry ( Flower power!)

HIGH SCHOOL

Ms. Sarah Shuttleworth - Chemistry Teacher

|15|

Year 9 have been working on the School Garden, producing a variety of plants, including vegetables, herbs and flowering ones for their CAS.

In Chemistry we have been studying indicators and the students selected different plants to test their viability as an indicator. Students collected leaves and petals, then using a mortar and pestle they extracted the pigments. They then added a solvent and used different strength acids and alkalis to test their indicator for colour changes.

At the end of the investigation it was clear that not all plants can be used, but a number can, and not all indicators change the same colour in acids or alkalis.

It is with pride but a little sadness that I say goodbye to the Year 12 IB Chemistry students. They have worked hard throughout their second year and have built up excellent practical skills to consolidate their theoretical knowledge. It is a difficult course and the students have continued to put in the time and effort needed with enthusiasm and a good sense of humour. There have been many positive outcomes, especially with their collaborative work and activities, helping each other showing resilience and perseverance. I have include a few of my favourite photos, taken during experiments and the “think tank” activity.

Cheerio to the Chemists!
