This past semester, the Pre-K 1 class embarked on their first ever IEYC unit, ‘This is Me’. Beginning with the ‘Entry Point’, parents and children came to school dressed in their national or favourite costume and, whilst the students gave a little twirl, we discussed different colours, patterns and styles. As we got to know each other, we learnt about how we are the same and how we are different, learning parts of the body and expressing our emotions.

Exploring homes and where we live was exciting, as we were able to build our own home out of junk or blocks, and we even got to write and post a letter to a friend.

All families are different, and we proudly shared photos of our own and learnt how to look after ourselves. We were very excited to plan and host a birthday for our class toy Monkey, making cakes and cards for him too, and our parents were invited to join the party!

We learnt about what we were like when we were babies, and even had a REAL baby come to class so we could see how to bathe and look after her. What fun it was to then be able to bathe our own ‘babies’ and get them dressed.

Looking after ourselves is very important, and we know that we must eat healthy food, keep our hands washed, and brush our teeth regularly. A dentist came to visit us in class and we all got a chance to brush some enormous teeth, as well as our own.

Keeping safe outdoors is important too, and our teacher taught us how to cross a road safely. We got to practice that a lot in the playground after we observed the real zebra crossing.

Finally, we have been discovering how important friends are, learning how to make someone feel better if they are sad, lonely or hurt. We all got to make a ‘friendship bracelet’ with beads, and gave it to our special friend in Pre-K 1.

We are looking forward to the ‘Exit Point’ now, when parents will come and hear some of the songs we have learned, and we will taste food from around the world. We can’t wait to see what our parents can make with the junk modeling or play with them in the mud kitchen!
