Facts of coastal water pollution:

* Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year.

* An estimated 14 billion pounds of trash-most of it plastic -is dumped in the world's oceans every year.

* Shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year.

* It is now believed that there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea.

* One of the biggest sources is called nonpoint source pollution, which occurs as a result of runoff. ... Nonpoint source pollution can make river and ocean water unsafe for humans and wildlife. In some areas, this pollution is so bad that it causes beaches to be closed after rainstorms.
