this open-minded attitude towards activities is unique to the
Fields Institute.
Governance and the Directorship
Over the first decade of the Canadian phase of my career I was
invited to serve, in turn, on scientific advisory boards of three
of the four Canadian institutes: the Scientific Advisory Panel
of Fields, the Comité Consultatif of the Centre de Recherches
Mathématiques (CRM), and then the Scientific Review Panel
at the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS),
